As you all know, I love CrossFit Competitions, and I just saw this past week that there is another one coming up next month!  It’s hosted by our friends at MBS CrossFit up in Broomfield.  Their gym is amazing (literally located ON a runway of an airport!

Here’s what we know about the event so far (information taken from the website to register for the event, link below):

“Events
5 K Run
The run consists of mostly sidewalk and street with potential to go off-road, but only for a short time. It is not flat, so don’t expect to beat your best 5k time! Male and female top runner will get prize package from one of our sponsors – TBA! Check out this google map for the tenative run route.

CrossFit Total
The CrossFit Total is a test of strength consisting of the back squat, press, and deadlift. There will be a short rest following the 5k run before doing the Total. The lifts will be done in the order of squat, press, and deadlift. You will have 3 attempts at max for each lift. Your total score is the combined “good” lifts of all 3 exercises. This may be an oppurtunity for a PR! Men’s and Women’s Total winners recieve a gift from one of our sponsors – TBA!

The Turkey
The final WOD will be announced following the 5k run. Expect something in the shorter timeframe (under 15 min) that doesn’t include a 5k run or heavy squat, deadlift, or press. This WOD will be scaled for the different classes (Elite, Open, and Intermediate). See classes below for more info. The Men’s and Women’s winners of the Turkey will get a frozen turkey for their Thanksgiving dinner!”

I’m not sure if you saw…. but there are three classes of athletes.  Do you know what that means?  ANYONE CAN COMPETE!!!  Who’s going to be the first “Smashby Trainee” to give their all at an incredibly fun CF Event?!  C’mon, someone else should sign up, and then the rest of the crew can come up to cheer for us!

The best part about this event is that it is so low key, people are going to be going there just to have fun.  And that’s what these things are all about!

Let me know, and let’s go team!

Hey everyone,

This past weekend I competed in the 2010 Colorado CrossFit Open, and it was a blast! Out of 86 competitors, I placed 22nd Overall!

There were 2 events Saturday, and 2 events on Sunday. I have to say, with this being my second ever CrossFit Competition, I was so proud of how well I did, and I exceeded my own expectations more than even I thought possible! In two of the four events, I placed in the top 15 (12th in event 2, and 13th in event three), and I won my heat in the second event!

Thank you so much to everyone who provided support throughout the weekend. It meant so much to me! Dave DeHart, thank you for coming out to watch on Saturday, and Katie Mathison thanks for coming out to watch on Sunday! It was awesome to have a cheering section 🙂

I had a friend tape the third event so you can see me in action. I hope you guys like it!

CrossFit: Defined.

I had an email discussion with some college buddies last week about fitness, and and the short version was basically addressing the question ‘what’s the best way to work out?'”  Obviously, I am a firm believer that CrossFit is the most effective program for improving overall fitness in existence today.  I am also the only one of us in this group who has spent hundreds (or thousands?  I’d say thousands) of hours reading and learning, practicing, following and participating in the program.

I consider myself very well-versed when it comes to a variety of training methods.  I was a competitive swimmer for 8 full years through high school and college, and in that time I was exposed to, studied, read about, and followed a variety of fitness regimens.  These ranged from plyometrics, stretching, high-rep/low-weight, low-rep/high weight, resistance band training, pilates and more.  Based on those experiences, when I started to learn more about CrossFit and was able to compare it to my previous knowledge, it made more sense to me than any other program.

Therefore, my stance in my discussion with my friends was to state that; based on the definitions of fitness and other key terms CrossFit provides, that no program is better… and in turn no athlete is fitter (in terms of overall fitness), than the most elite CrossFit athletes.

There’s more to the discussion than that, but that’s the gist of it.  As I was typing up my own, rather long-winded explanation, however, I remembered an article that is available for free online to anyone that was interested!  It very clearly explains everything to know about CrossFit, why it exists and why the founders claim it to be most effective and inclusive fitness program around.

For me, this article should not be called “What is Fitness?”

In my opinion, it should be referred to as:

The CrossFit Manifesto!

Do me a favor, if you have any interest in CrossFit at all, take a few moments and read this article.
If you’ve read this article before, read it again.  It’s so good!  The piece below, to me, is CrossFit: Defined.

Enjoy, everyone!

For many CrossFitters, making it all the way to the “World Championships” of the CrossFit Games is the ultimate dream.  Personally, my goal is qualify for the games on an Affiliate Team next year!  Training starts… now!  This video shows highlights of the individual competition from the Games this year, and I love it!

I saw this article posted on Facebook from the CrossFit Chesterton website, and really liked it.  To me, Jason did a great job of not making the story, or joining his gym, or starting to train, about him.  It’s about YOU.  You should come in because you want to get better.  You should join CIA CrossFit because you want to be more effective; in the gym, in our workouts, but more importantly… in life!  I hope you like the post, too!

“BEFORE YOU THINK ABOUT JOINING…

… You need to understand that you can get sweaty doing anything. I can slap a quirky tough guy name on hundreds of reps of anything sprinkle some gymnastic chalk on it and tell you that you’re doing great… and yeah if you haven’t touched a barbell in years your body will respond, but that is not how we operate.

Our program and methods have a proven history of success, we’ll leave it at that. If you want access to our world it is going to be entirely on you.

I don’t have a clever advertising plan. Hell I don’t even have a phone for you to call or a sign for you to find the damn place, but for over a year now the right people have walked through our doors. Grandmas, fighters, figure skaters, tri-athletes, power lifters, We just let them do our talking…

The idea of a “life changing” experience is great. Hey we have a few stories that would even bring a tear to Rambo’s eye, but their success is entirely self driven. YOU have to want this. You must realize that through physical discomfort all things are possible. We are here to coach you, provide access to a training program far superior to whatever else you have done and a top shelf environment (even though its a little dirty sometimes) to train in. Arrogant? Yes… but you wouldn’t be reading this nonsense if it wasn’t true.

Our crew is here to get you on track, get you up to speed, and turn you loose. No one is going to cuddle you and give you fabricated scripts on weightlifting and motivation.

You have to be willing to subject yourself to physical discomfort for an extended period of time. Flat out, that’s it. Through your own efforts and our guidance you will evolve and learn.

Through time, our gym has taken on its own personality. There are dozens of members that are very knowledgeable in all elements of the CrossFit game as well as elements of fitness and athletics. Our members are our greatest asset, their knowledge is priceless, and we utilize that gift to the fullest each day.

You won’t find yourself doing hundreds of reps with a pvc pipe everyday and reciting memorized scripts on different lifts! You are going to be taught what to do slowly for months, monitored for weeks, and corrected daily, as is everyone else in the place. We teach the foundations and monitor your safety, leaving a great deal of the learning process open for self interpretation. By doing this we allow you to better determine what allows you to move properly.

Simply stated what works for one may not work for another, and no youtube video will fix every person. That is where our training experience and professionalism pay off!

Still with me?

If so then you have probably found a new training facility, Whether you are looking to supplement your current sport with a new training program, in need of a well planned training regime, or need a place to do your own thing. We may be what you are looking for, and would love to have you on board!

Oh and did I mention that we have a hell of a good time learning and suffering each day with each other?

–Jason (CrossFit Chesterton)”
