Another incredible week with our competition team. It was so cool getting a chance to cheer each other on again. The best part, is that it’s only week 2 and we have 4 more weeks to do this!

A special thanks to Megan’s boyfriend for walking around with my piece of junk camera during the 2nd heat of the WOD today. Next week I’ll bring the nicer camera.

GREAT JOB, TEAM!!!

This week it snowed over 4 feet in the ski resorts 90 minutes away from where I live. That makes me very happy.

Today, it is going to be 70 degrees in Denver. That ALSO makes me very happy! In preparation for what is surely going to be an EPIC summer here in D-town, here’s a little clip of a fun summertime activity!

I just wanted to remind everyone that the CrossFit Lakewood Competition Team will be completing the second WOD of the 2011 CrossFit Games Open at the gym at 11:00am on Saturday.

The workout is:
As many rounds and reps as possible in 15 minutes of:
9 Deadlifts (155lbs / 70kg) / 12 Push-ups / 15 Box jumps (24″)

Most of us have hit at least a few rounds of this already, and it’s a burner for sure.

Come on out and support the CFLW Team!

A part of our Competition Team!

So yesterday was the day that most of the athletes on the CrossFit Lakewood Competition Team completed the first workout for the 2011 CrossFit Games Open.

There were three full heats of competitors, and the energy was really high! After the dust settled, I think we were all very relieved to have the first week’s event over with.

A few hours later, though, they announced that the Week 1 Deadline had been pushed back one week.
I asked this in my last post, but am curious what you guys think:

Is it worth trying it again at some point this week to better our scores?!

I only filmed my heat (to check my form) of the workout, but if Orion puts together a video of the event, I’ll post it on here! For now, I’ll toss in a few pictures from Saturday, courtesy of Megan and Rachel!

Well, if attending the 2011 CrossFit Games was in your summer plans, mark your calendars and book your hotel rooms! Just this morning, the dates for the World Games were released!

The Games will be held July 29, 30, 31!

Here’s the announcment from the official CrossFit Games website:

The 2011 CrossFit Games return to the Home Depot Center with a $1 Million Total Purse
The Fittest on Earth™ compete for the crown July 29-31, 2011 in Los Angeles

The Home Depot Center in Carson, CA will be home to the 2011 CrossFit Games from July 29-31. The 125 acre facility, located on the campus of California State University Dominguez Hills, is a fantastic venue for our sport, with the Tennis and Track stadiums being the main arenas again, each with 8,000 seats. Tickets go on sale Feb 1.

We’re proud to announce that Reebok is the title sponsor of the Games. Reebok and CrossFit have created a ten-year partnership, and part of the Reebok commitment to the CrossFit community is a $1 million purse for the Games season, including a top prize of $250,000 each for the Fittest Man and Woman on Earth.

Approximately 50 men, 50 women, 50 teams, and 20 Masters for each division will qualify for the Games and the opportunity to compete for the title of Fittest on Earth™. The season begins in early March with the Open Qualifiers, and follows up with 17 Regionals in late May and June.

The competition will be fierce, so good luck to all in their training!”

I can’t even put into words how awesome of a day it was yesterday!

There were 6 athletes from CrossFit Lakewood who competed in the “Earn Your Turkey Challenge” at MBS CrossFit, and it was a full house all day long!

The event began with an outdoor 5k (~3.1 Mile) Hill run through the industrial park by the gym. The run wouldn’t have been as bad if the entire 1st half wasn’t downhill, and then the entire 2nd half uphill! All said, though, the weather being on the cooler side made this run much more tolerable. Many runners were out of the gate fast, and by the end, there was quite a spread of finishers. I think it ended with 100% of CrossFit Lakewood athletes setting 5k PR’s, some by MINUTES. How awesome is that!?

After that was the CrossFit Total Event. That meant each athlete had 35 minutes to complete 3 attempts at their 1 Rep Max for three different exercises. In order, they were the Back Squat, the Shoulder Press, and the Deadlift. The way they broke down the event was with 9 platforms, and 4 athletes at each one. While one was lifting, another two were spotting (if necessary) while the 4th athlete prepared to lift next. Setting up and changing weights was a team effort, and you instantly bonded with the other competitors there with you. It was one of the coolest things I’ve been a part of, for sure. For the CrossFit Lakewood athletes, almost every single lift ended up being a PR. That is unheard of, and awesome!

After the Totals were completed, they opened the huge airplane hangar door, and rolled in huge wooden boards. Well, it turns out that they BUILT A WALL right in the middle of the gym, and also lowered 10 15-foot ropes from the ceiling. Yeah, the last workout was going to be nuts! CrossFit prepares us for the unknown and unknowable, and while some people may have guessed that rope climbs would have been a part of the workout, I don’t think anyone would have guessed that we would have had to climb a 5-ft wall 22 times with a burpee on either side!

Yeah. They just built a wall!

Once the wall was built, Pat Burke (owner of MBS CrossFit) gathered all of the athletes together and announced the Final Workout. It was called the “Deep Fried Turkey.” For the Elite Group it was 15 Ground-To-Overheads with 115lbs. That meant just to get the weight overhead with arms locked out however you could; clean and jerk, snatch, didn’t matter. Next came 10 Burpee Wall-Jumps – Drop to the ground for the burpee part, jump over the wall, that’s one rep. After that was the game changer… 5 ascents up a 15-foot rope. Once those are done, it’s back to 10 more burpee wall-jumps, and then another 15 ground-to-overheads. For the other classes of competitors there were only a few modifications made, but it was basically the same thing. Quite the workout. Here’s the kicker…. there was a 10 minute cap on it. That meant if you didn’t complete all of that stuff in 10 minutes, your total score would just be the total number of reps you did complete.

The Final Workout!

At the end of the day, we spent about 10 full hours at MBS CrossFit, and even though it got really cold at the end of the night, I wouldn’t have changed a thing.

It was so amazing to be part of the CrossFit Lakewood family, and seeing what we were all capable of was so much fun! On top of that, the spirit of camaraderie that all of the competitors showed towards one another was so incredible.

GREAT JOB to everyone who competed, and THANK YOU for everyone who was there to support us!

Onto the next competition!…. you’ll know when that is as soon as I do!

As you all know, I love CrossFit Competitions, and I just saw this past week that there is another one coming up next month!  It’s hosted by our friends at MBS CrossFit up in Broomfield.  Their gym is amazing (literally located ON a runway of an airport!

Here’s what we know about the event so far (information taken from the website to register for the event, link below):

“Events
5 K Run
The run consists of mostly sidewalk and street with potential to go off-road, but only for a short time. It is not flat, so don’t expect to beat your best 5k time! Male and female top runner will get prize package from one of our sponsors – TBA! Check out this google map for the tenative run route.

CrossFit Total
The CrossFit Total is a test of strength consisting of the back squat, press, and deadlift. There will be a short rest following the 5k run before doing the Total. The lifts will be done in the order of squat, press, and deadlift. You will have 3 attempts at max for each lift. Your total score is the combined “good” lifts of all 3 exercises. This may be an oppurtunity for a PR! Men’s and Women’s Total winners recieve a gift from one of our sponsors – TBA!

The Turkey
The final WOD will be announced following the 5k run. Expect something in the shorter timeframe (under 15 min) that doesn’t include a 5k run or heavy squat, deadlift, or press. This WOD will be scaled for the different classes (Elite, Open, and Intermediate). See classes below for more info. The Men’s and Women’s winners of the Turkey will get a frozen turkey for their Thanksgiving dinner!”

I’m not sure if you saw…. but there are three classes of athletes.  Do you know what that means?  ANYONE CAN COMPETE!!!  Who’s going to be the first “Smashby Trainee” to give their all at an incredibly fun CF Event?!  C’mon, someone else should sign up, and then the rest of the crew can come up to cheer for us!

The best part about this event is that it is so low key, people are going to be going there just to have fun.  And that’s what these things are all about!

Let me know, and let’s go team!

Hey everyone,

This past weekend I competed in the 2010 Colorado CrossFit Open, and it was a blast! Out of 86 competitors, I placed 22nd Overall!

There were 2 events Saturday, and 2 events on Sunday. I have to say, with this being my second ever CrossFit Competition, I was so proud of how well I did, and I exceeded my own expectations more than even I thought possible! In two of the four events, I placed in the top 15 (12th in event 2, and 13th in event three), and I won my heat in the second event!

Thank you so much to everyone who provided support throughout the weekend. It meant so much to me! Dave DeHart, thank you for coming out to watch on Saturday, and Katie Mathison thanks for coming out to watch on Sunday! It was awesome to have a cheering section 🙂

I had a friend tape the third event so you can see me in action. I hope you guys like it!
