When I moved to Colorado in 2006, I had only been “skiing” two or three times. The word “skiing” is in quotations because you can hardly call what I did skiing. Yet I’ll never forget the first day I took a snowboard on the slopes of Winter Park, had friends give me about 15 minutes of pointers, and then I said, “Go have fun, I’ll meet you for lunch.” I was committed to try and learn this new sport that so many of my friends had been doing their whole lives. So for three consecutive days, I tried to teach myself how to snowboard. And I fell. A lot. My butt was bruised, right along with my ego, but I remember walking off the mountain at the end of each day a bit more confident. I was making progress, and it felt great!

For the next 7 years, I would buy a pass to the incredible resorts around Denver, and each year I kept getting better and better! I wasn’t ready to drop out of a Heli-skiing down a couloir, and I wasn’t crushing the Super Pipe with all of the park rats, but I could hold my own. It took me several seasons to feel as though I had become “good” at this winter sport.  Why tell you this story? Am I about to announce that I’m joining the Semi-Pro Snowboard Cross circuit? No, it is not. It’s to say that while it takes people like me years to learn how to ski on snow, there are people out there who simply need more. People like Candide Thovex, professional skiier and Freeride World Champion, for example. In partnership with Audi, he starred in one of the best freeriding segments of the year. Oh, and he wasn’t on snow for any of it. I hope you like the video below as much as I did.

I am a huge fan of “Highlight Reels” for pretty much anything. A professional sports team’s championship run, an extreme sports season highlights, middle school spelling bee finals, I love ’em all!

The crew at Absolute Zero put together a pretty awesome video with some of their best moments from Mountain Biking and Skiing in 2011. Cleverly enough, the video below is called the “Absolute Zero 2011 Reel“.

The very final scene here is one of my favorites that has been featured all over. It is a ski jump “feature” that has 13 skiers going off in formation at almost the same time. Visually, I just find it breathtaking.

As ski season starts to pick up here for a lot of us, many of us have goals to use our training to help get us in better shape for the snow. I hope you like this!

This post is most definitely for my crew at ApresPowder!  Wow.

I don't even know what to say....

This video is awesome.

Sergio, yeah I’m talking to you, Nazzaro. Try to tell me you DON’T like this Urban Skiing video. It’s definitely the coolest segment I’ve ever seen.

C’mon, snow in the mountains!!

SKI SEASON IS HERE!!!!!! I can’t believe it, but Arapahoe Basin opens TODAY!!! Sure the base is only 18″, but you need to start somewhere!

That being said, let’s take a collective moment of silence and pray that the snow gods look down on us favorably this year! Jack from Apres Powder shared this video that shows what I can only call “STUPID POWDER” from the crew at Salomon Freeski TV.

I should have my Season Pass within the week (What up, Epic Pass Local!) and when that day comes, it’s on.
The goal is to hit my first tracks by mid-to-late-November. (Too many CrossFit events between now and then, which I am NOT complaining about!)

It’s basically ski/snowboard season, so I’m going to be posting more stuff like this on the blog. Prepare yourselves!

Some of you may have seen the interview that my buddy Jack at Apres Powder did with me on how to best prepare for the Winter Sports season. Well that was the first event that got me jazzed to shred. The second, was seeing the Red Bull Media House and Brain Farm Cinema film The Art of FLIGHT… TWO NIGHTS IN A ROW for the premiers here in Denver/Boulder.

And then getting a photo op with the one and only TRAVIS RICE! (Who is the best snowboarder in the world.)

Needless to say, I’m pretty stoked for that first powder day. My buddy Josh isn’t helping too much, by posting stuff like the video below, either! I may be a snowboarder, but even those two-plankers like Bobby Brown can pull some jaw-dropping stuff. Check it out, and enjoy!

This is a pretty incredible accomplishment.  I cannot even imagine flying THROUGH a mountain!  “Bird Man” Jeb Corliss, does it again as he flies THROUGH Tianmen Mountain in his wingsuit!

CCTV.com gives the official recap:
“Tianmen Hole is a 360-foot-tall, 96-foot-wide, and 260-foot-long formation located near the city of Zhangjiajie in central China’s Hunan Province. Corliss will jump from a helicopter hovering at 6,000 feet and attempt to glide through the hole.”

To bring his story a little closer to home (since I’ve never been to China), here is another video of Jeb Proxy Flying at the Matternhorn in Switzerland!

I was lucky enough to get to snowboard there with some of my buddies a few years ago, so seeing this video brought back some memories!

Here’s the video

And to remind my buddies of that incredible trip, here are some pictures from us at Zermatt!

Today is the first day of fall, huh? Time FLIES! With Autumn right around the corner, that only means one thing….

WINTER IS ALMOST HERE!!!

Now, I love summertime. So much. Soooo much. Being outside in the sun is one of my favorite past times, but when that time of the year comes when the snow starts to fall… I’m ready to shred!

My buddy Jack, who runs the Apres Powder Winter Sports Blog that I’ve featured here quite a bit, wanted to take a few minutes and ask me about how I prepare (and recommend other people prepare) for another epic season of crushin’ pow.

Check out the interview by CLICKING HERE! I think Jack did an AMAZINg job! Thoughts?

Yesterday I said that the next three days of the Moment of Awesomeness posts would go from the dirt, to the snow, to the city streets. I can’t let you down now, can I?

After yesterday’s awesome mountain biking videos, we’re taking it to the slopes today with the trailer for the Legs of Steel Crew’s movie entitled Nothing Else Matters. There are some gnarly airs in this 3 minute clip, and the final scene with what looks like a dozen skiers is probably my favorite of the whole video.

Those of you (like me), who may want at least a few snowboarders in your trailers, check out this one from Toy Soldier Productions called “Set Your Sights.” Some epic hits in this one, too!

Ski and Snowboarding season is almost over here in Denver, so give me a least one or two more posts showing epic scenes from these sports.

Today’s video (which I learned about through my buddy, Jack Cerchiara – Founder of the “Apres Powder” blog) comes from skiier Jamie Pierre, completely loaded up with GoProHDcross cameras! Not only is the snow beautiful, some of the shots he gets are incredible. Enjoy!
