CrossFit Competitions can be very intense. They often include multiple events and span over several days, too. There are lots of other fun races and competitions out there, many of which I’ve never even heard of until this past year!

The first of these is the Warrior Dash that I snoozed on and missed this past year, but heard from friends that it was an absolute blast. I will not be missing this next year. (August 2011, by the way)

Then there’s another event which looks to be much more intense than the 3.15 mile Warrior Dash:
The Tough Mudder

Information about the race (obtained from the website above):
Course Length: About 7 Miles
Course Completion Time: Estimated 2 hours and 30 minutes
Course Elevation: Beaver Creek Resort has a base elevation of 8,100 feet, and the course itself sees a 1,000ft change in elevation!
Want to see some of the obstacles that need to be conquered? Click here to check them out!

Still not convinced that it’d be fun? Watch the video below!

So who’s coming with me? I’m registering and think you should, too. The more, the merrier!

Are you a Tough Mudder?

Hey guys,

Today is my first full day back in the US in two full weeks. The vacation I had in Brazil visiting my family was amazing, and I came back even more energized and excited about CrossFit than I was when I left. I’m ready to train myself, I’m ready to coach you guys, and I’m ready to feel the positivity that comes from BOTH of those things.

While sitting on the beach, I did a lot of thinking about myself as a trainer, and why I do what I do. Do I want to work as a CrossFit trainer full-time? 100% Yes. But am I coaching just to reach that point? 100% No.

I have been a coach in some form or another for over 12 years, and have trained athletes from ages 3-73. I do it because it’s what I love. I do it because I think I’m pretty good at it. But most importantly, I do it for you guys. That was a very powerful feeling to put into words for myself.

Having ONE person come up to me and say: “Through this training/sport/practice, I have gained more confidence in my life” is what makes it worth it for me. And you know what? It’s happened a lot. That’s why I do it. But I’m constantly trying to improve. Constantly.

The post below from the CrossFit Lisbeth blog helped me shed some light to the concept of improving. We aren’t always good at things, we aren’t always “nice” (as she says in the post) and we don’t always want to put in the time to improve areas of our lives that could benefit from a little practice.

Do you have fitness goals? For me, if you walk through the door at the gym, you’re already on your way to improving and reaching those goals. The hardest part is just getting there. My advice, get out the door, get into or onto your car/cab/bus/scooter/ice skates and get to the gym. It may not always be fun (although it can be if you want), but it will always leave you Better Than Yesterday

Similarly, and like the article says (I’m paraphrasing), Life may not always be fun, either. But as long as we take the time to improve something, we’re better than we were when we started. She writes “You are just like CrossFit. Full of so many different skills and movements that you can’t be great at all of them all of the time.” But we can improve things little by little.

Read the short article below and answer this in the comments section (it can be CrossFit related or not):
“What is one thing that you, personally, would like to improve?”

I couldn’t think of a name to give this post, so I think since I try to always get in some CrossFit training when I “leave town”, I’m going to start this series called: “On The Road”

Most of you know I am spending two weeks in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, visiting my family. While I was walking along Ipanema Beach last night, I stopped by the rock at the end called Arpoador. While sitting down and watching the surfers who are always out there, I looked to my left and noticed something for the first time ever…

There was a gym just off the beach, complete with pull-up bars, parallel bars, benches, etc. Here’s the kicker, though… the weights that they had there were barbells with ROCKS as the weights!! I can’t even put it into words how awesome it was, so I told myself I would go back the next day, camera in hand (of course!), and get in a workout to capture this place.

Gym Rules: Translated into English. Amazing.

It’s 100% free, and people are working out there all the time. Check out the pictures!

The Outdoor Rock Gym at the Arpoador in Rio de Janeiro!

This gym may or may not have been started by Fred Flintsone

CrossFitters: We like lifting heavy things

*FYI*
The workout I did was:
3 Rounds for time of-
3 Squat Cleans (80kg or 176lb bar) / 6 Chest-to-Bar Pull-Ups / 9 Burpees / 12 Double-Unders

This was the first workout I did in 9 days after “vacation eating” for the last week and a half! I should have been staying more paleo down here πŸ™‚

This was the coolest outdoor workout I've ever done!

This morning I’m hitting you guys with some Free-Running action. I guess I can stop making it seem like it’s not going to happen again, huh?

As I’ve said in the past, the self-awareness and -control these guys have over their position in space is more than admirable in my opinion. We may never want to jump from building to building, but if we find ourselves in a place where something more than just walking or running is required, would we even know what to do? (stranded somewhere, looking for an escape from a negative scenario)

Check out this awesome video below, and after you watch it, answer me this:

Do you think it’s relevant to (or would you like to) add similar types of gymnastics movements in the safety of our gym in order to improve our overall athleticism?

I cant think of a time where I would be included in the Moment of Awesomeness… until moments like this come along.

Just like “learn and play new sports” is one of the fundamental statements that CrossFit believes in…. “travel and visit new places” is something that I believe in very firmly as well.

I am visiting a cousin of mine in a place called Porto Seguro, Brazil (where she has lived for the past 15+ years), and this is the city where the entire country of Brazil was founded. Its a pretty amazing place!!

There will be many more pictures to share once I get back, but for now, I just wanted to show you guys one of the places that you can visit in this world. Its amazing here.

If you want to visit, just let me know!

The goal for tomorrow… get in a nice CrossFit workout before starting the day. Ill let you know if I get there!

I hope everyone had an awesome Thanksgiving!!!

As you read about in the post summarizing the event, it was an amazing day of competing for the “Earn Your Turkey Challenge”!

Here are links to the photo albums that are available on Facebook!

This is what 3 workouts in a day does to you!

For a couple of months growing up I had a fascination with Parkour, or free running. I spent hours watching videos online and wishing I could do some of the things these amazing athletes were accomplishing just with their own body, balance, strength, and courage.

There was actually another post I wrote back in August that also featured a Parkour video, but this stuff is so cool, I thought I’d post another!

Enjoy the video, but please….

Don’t try this at home!

For those of you who may not know, I am entering my 5th season as an avid snowboarder since moving to Denver in September of 2006. Just like I remember my first CrossFit workout, I remember my first day on a snowboard.
Oh… we were just kids back then!

Yesterday was my first day of this season, and it was amazing. I know a few of you are heading up to start your seasons tomorrow, so I wanted to just share a little video with you to get you fired up.

CrossFit training makes you stronger, it gets you in better cardiovascular shape, and yes…. it makes you a better snowboarder or skier, too!

Enjoy, and SHRED WELL this year!!!

The video I am going to post below is not my favorite video of all time.
However, for those of you who have been with me since the beginning, it means a little more to us.

BOOOOOM!

That is all.

Hey everyone,

My brother sent me the link below last week, and I have read over it a few times trying to decide whether or not to share it with you guys. The article is from the blog over at mint.com. Basically it is telling us some of the most common things (or lies, as they word it) people tell us in order to “protect” us from failure before going off to pursue out true passion.

Ultimately I am deciding to post it because I think many of us have identified a dream or passion in our lives, and maybe more than a few of us have been too afraid to follow it. At least so far.

One message I took from this article (and there are many more like it in circulation) is that there are risks out there that are worth taking. Another thing I’ve realized for myself, is that many (if not all) of the people who have ever given me advice like that were not always happy themselves (either personally or professionally).

My point is this:
We are responsible for our own actions. Going out on a limb and taking a huge leap of faith can lead to negative consequences. But it doesn’t have to. Don’t associate “risk” with “failure”. They don’t always go together.

One of my favorite quotes comes from legendary coach Vince Lombardi:
“It’s not whether you get knocked down; it’s whether you get back up.”

Taking a chance and either failing or succeeding merely means you have the opportunity to learn from what happened, and choose to repeat your path, or make changes to try and get a different result. While I am not advising that anyone quit their job and sell the house to try and make your “Homemade Pog Stand” business take off (seriously, don’t do it)…. but I am asking that you take a second to think about what you really want to do or accomplish in life, and start doing the research and taking the steps to make it more of a reality.

I know a lot of people who thought they wanted 6-figure salaries. And I know a lot of those people who reached that point. What has surprised me, though, is how many of those same people walked away because they were miserable in their jobs. Instead, they found careers that were much more gratifying and in line with their passions and interests… and they’re much happier today.

Read the article below, and leave your thoughts in the “Comments” section. I’m looking forward to some good discussion!
