Will Lind, one of our athletes at CF Lakewood asked me a question a while back, so here’s my reply!

He’s basically asking how I think the huge popularity spike CrossFit is experiencing will impact the quantity, and more importantly QUALITY, of people out there who are able to call themselves “Certified CrossFit Coaches”. For only $1,000, a 2-day course, and passing a quick exam, anyone out there can be certified.

In the video, which features a bit of the classic “Smashby Rambling” (lay off, it’s been a while since I’ve done a video like this!), I take a few different angles to the question.

At the end of the day, though, my stance remains the same:
The good gyms/trainers/”families” will generally stay strong and get stronger. The bad will always probably stay bad and eventually go out of business. My advice to athletes is to find a program and a gym that fills you with confidence, not only in the programming (am I getting strongers, faster, healthier, and having FUN) but also in the trainers there (do you trust them with your health and safety) and embrace it! If you are missing either one of those, find a place where you have it. There are some incredible gyms out there, and you deserve to be at one of them!

More questions welcome, as always!

My buddy Rj (aka Rejalicious) sent me this link the other day with the note, “Maybe you could feature this on your blog.” It’s so cool when your friends know you well enough to see something and think, “He would LOVE this”… and for them to be right!

Today’s Thought of the Day:
In the face of incredible adversity and hardship, how will you react? Will you throw in the towel and give up, or will you bounce back and do something incredible?

The video and story featured below are from GrindTv.com, and they discuss Josh Dueck. In 2004, Josh suffered an injury while practicing on a ski jump that left him paralyzed from the waist down. The story could stop here, with him being introduced to ski downhill racing (in his sit-ski), then entering into the racing circuit. His first year he got worked every race and didn’t like that very much. So he practiced all summer, and the next year won the World Championships. Oh yeah… he then went on to the Paralympic Games in 2010 and won the Silver Medal for Canada. How awesome and inspiring is that?!

What? That’s not cool enough for you? Man, you guys are tough to please.

Ok, fine. Josh is back again with another AMAZING story. This time, he’s featured for being the first paraplegic skier to complete a back flip (also from GrindTv.com). Next time something comes at you and you view it as a challenge, try your best to find a way to view it as an OPPORTUNITY to excel and conquer that challenge.

I know Josh did, and still is to this day! Thanks for the link, Rj.

Art is a beautiful thing. So is choreography. So is family. So is relaxing music. So is teamwork. So are swords.

But BUTTERFLY KNIVES? Those just scare me.

That is all.

My good friend Molly King is amazing. You know this if you’ve followed my blog because anything she’s shared with us has been mind-blowing and awesome. Ok, enough about her, let’s get onto the next incredible thing she’s shared via facebook.

Today’s Thought of the Day:
The ‘pursuit of happiness’ is often backwards in our culture. Watch this video and see if you fall into that trap, or if you have “correctly” prioritized things to help make you as positive as possible… every day!

I am a huge fan of talks and presentations that ask people to question things. Big things. Topics like “How can my actions, thoughts, and beliefs fundamentally impact my true state of happiness?”

Shawn Achor (Positive Psychology Expert), delivers this TED Talk at TEDxBloomington called “The Happy Secret to Better Work” and it is awesome. Aside from delivering some VERY funny material, the issues he brings up ring oh-so-true with me, and I hope with many of you, too.

A few highlights of his presentation, and some of my summary/thoughts about them:

“If we study what is merely average, we will remain merely average…”
~ He explains how instead of ELIMINATING the “outliers” to cater to the average in the world, as our culture likes doing (that whole one-size-fits-all mentality), that we should instead spend more time focusing on people who excel in things. The goal shouldn’t be to bring everyone DOWN to the average, but instead to raise the average UP to those people who are great!

(When asked what Harvard students could possible have to be UNhappy about)
“What that question assumes is that our EXTERNAL world is predictive of our happiness levels. When in reality, if I know everything about your external world, I can only predict 10% of your long-term happiness. 90% of your long-term happiness is predicted not by your external world, but by the way your brain processes the world. And if we change… our formula for happiness and success, what we can do is change the way that we can then effect reality.”
~ Funny how that works, huh? The old American saying of trying to “Keep up with the Jones'”, or… the family that “looks” the prettiest, happiest, richest, etc… is FUNDAMENTALLY flawed. Instead, that actually has just as much truth to it as “Mo’ Money, Mo’ Problems.” Does money/success/wealth (in whatever sense you mean wealth) lead to happiness? Potentially there could be ZERO correlation between the two. So yeah, the poorest family on the block might have the house filled with the most love and happiness imaginable. Take ANY situation (person with the nicest car/job/clothes/things) and put those material items into perspective. At the end of the day, true happiness is found within your head and your heart.

“We need to reverse the (current) formula for happiness and success”
~ Exactly true. As he points out, right now the goal is to get THE BEST of everything. The reason for that is because we think that WHEN we get “that thing”, that we’ll be happy. What ends up happening instead? If and when we do get it, we just set the bar even higher. You grow up, grow old, and then die… potentially never having been happy or proud of ANYTHING you’ve done. Only because you always wanted more. So sad.

Stop for a minute and think of THREE THINGS you’re proud of RIGHT NOW in your life.

Seriously… do it. You can post it in the comments section here for everyone to see and discuss, or you can keep it to yourself. But smile and be proud of yourself for a minute.

Three Things I’m Proud Of/Grateful For:
1- That I get the privilege to coach AMAZING people everyday and see the positive changes they choose to make in their lives!
2- That I have several jobs, my own car, a place to live, and food on the table every day. So many people may never experience that “comfort” a single time in their entire lives.
3- That despite how immature I was growing up at times, that I have an absolutely amazing family filled with love and support for one another. Without them, I would be nowhere. I love them!

See? Man, that feels good!

… gone for a minute, but I’m back again!

Let’s get things on this blog ramped back up the right way, folks!

There will be some fun stuff posted over the next few days, so get your read/watching/replying hats ready. It’s going to be a great time!

Happy Hump Day, everyone!
(Thanks for the video, Russell)

Well, it finally happened….

Renegade Fitness has teamed with the greatest Paleo blog in the entire universe!!! My very good friend, Juli Bauer (or julibauer as I call her), runs the site PaleOMG and the site is good. I mean… as Nacho Libre would say, “it’s reallllly guuu”.

Check out the shirts below, and buy them directly on our site!

If Juli didn’t look so good in these shirts, people would STILL probably buy them. I mean, the shirts are comfy!

There’s the White Tank Top:

This commerical/segment is now in the top 3 most “fun” things I’ve seen in CrossFit. Any of you who know me relatively well will be able to see why.

Bottom line… go ahead and say CrossFit sold out. This “campaign” of theirs is going to spread the word to so many more people than we can even imagine.

Brace yourselves…. the “Sport of Fitness” really has arrived. The next 3 months leading up to Regionals are going to be NUTS!

Yesterday was our very own Alon’s birthday! Alon has done more in the last 6-8 months to inspire everyone around him (myself most DEFINITELY included) than, probably, anyone else I know.

His dedication to his fitness, his diet and his CONSTANTLY positive and motivated attitude is just an absolute joy to be around… 100% of the time.

Oh. He’s also getting pretty strong, too.

Yesterday, on his 29th birthday, he did a little bit of Shoulder Press.

He put up 170lbs… twice… in a row.

(If you think that since his feet moved so it doesn’t count…. shut up.) 🙂

Alon definitely qualifies for BEAST MOOODE!!

Today’s Thought of the Day:
Skinny does NOT equal beautiful.

For me, I think healthy is beautiful.

I’ve been sitting on sharing this video all morning because I wanted to write some deep and thoughtful message to go along with it, but I just don’t have it today. Instead, just enjoy this incredible message…. and BELIEVE it!

I love watching videos like this!

As they say in the video, by The Journey TV: “Let’s Change our Paradigm

I’m a huge CrossFit Nerd and my friends know that. However, to be honest, many of the “CrossFit Games” videos that are put together don’t do it for me. They’re comprised of clips that I’ve seen a million times, with the story I watch as it unfolded… it’s just not exciting enough for me.

This video below is AWESOME though. In under 3 minutes, everyone can see just how FAST the CrossFit Games event has grown over the last 5 years. This stuff is so cool. Last year, 26,000 people signed up to compete. I can’t even imagine what this year is going to bring!

The 2012 CrossFit Games Beta website has been released, and the official sign-ups go live on February 1st! THAT’S ONLY 9 DAYS AWAY!!

Are you curious about the dates for this year’s competition? Here’s the excerpt directly from the website!

“The 2012 CrossFit Games season is almost here! Registration for the Open begins on February 1. We will announce the first Open workout on February 22. After five Open workouts, one each week, the top 60 men, 60 women, and 30 teams in each region will qualify to compete at one of 17 Regional competitions.

This year, Regionals will take place over the course of five weekends from April 27 to May 27. The venues have not been announced yet. Many venues are different from last year, so don’t book your travel yet. Regional locations will be announced in early February.

The Regional competitions will follow a similar format to 2011. Over the course of three days, the Region’s best men, women, and teams will compete for a precious few Games qualifying spots. The Regional workouts will be released on Wednesday, April 18.

This year, all athletes who hope to compete at the Games will compete at Regionals, so make sure you get out there and see the stars in action. Volunteer registration for Regionals will open up the Games site in February.

Below are the dates for each Regional:

April 27-29 (South East, South Central, Canada West)

May 3-6 (Mid Atlantic, South West, Africa, Asia)

May 11-13 (Central East, SoCal, Canada East, Latin America)

May 18-20 (North Central, NorCal, Australia)

May 25-27 (North East, North West, Europe)”

Yep, nerves are starting to build already. Only one month to go.
