The first stop on this crazy adventure is a place called Wahoo’s Fish Tacos!  I ate there for lunch the other day, and as I’ve done for the last few months if I eat Mexican cuisine, I knew I wasn’t going to eat a tortilla if I went for a taco or burrito.  It’s unnecessary carbs, and quite frankly, I don’t love the taste so I don’t get one.  Usually I do a bowl of some sort.

When I looked at the menu, though, I saw an option that looked a lot better for me.  The Wahoo’s Salad!  Since I was hungry, I decided to get it with steak AND shrimp, too.  When the plate came out, I was in heaven!

Will you look at that!  Lettuce, veggies, guacamole, steak, shrimp, and hot sauce!!  It was amazing.  To me, the little tortilla strips are just bad carbs so I didn’t touch them, and the sauce they provided didn’t add anything to meal, so I didn’t use that either.

Fast forward 15 minutes and 4 songs on my iPod:

I don’t know where you grew up, but where I come from, crushing a meal like that gets you membership into a pretty exclusive group.  Maybe you’ve heard of it: The Clean Plate Club!

The point is, even if you go out to a place who’s cuisine may not be very “paleo”, you can still make choices that are much better for your body, and really delicious.  I’ll rate this meal an 8.4 on the Paleo scale.

p.s.- Fine, you caught me.  I did eat two of the tortilla strips, but JUST TWO!

This is the first post of a new series called: “The Pursuit of Paleo”

In these posts, I’ll share stories and ideas for how to keep your diet geared towards what I feel is the most effective  way to tailor your nutrition.  For me, that way is by following a Paleolithic diet.  What is that?  I won’t overwhelm you with details here, but basically it means you eat foods that were available 10,000 years ago.  If it’s processed or has a label on it, it’s probably not good for you.  CrossFit.com says in it’s World Class Fitness in 100 Words: “Eat meat and vegetables, nuts and seeds, some fruit, little starch and no sugar.”  That’s as simple as it gets.

Now let me start this new segment of the blog by saying one thing:

I am by no means a model of what a person should or should not eat.  However, I am constantly improving my own diet and can say, with complete confidence, that proper nutrition is equally as important (if not more important) than an effective training program.  If you address and improve your diet, you will improve your quality of life.  You can quote me on that.

Finally, everything I write in these segments are my own personal thoughts and opinions.  I am not a nutritionist, so understand that it’s just my opinion and take what I’m saying with a grain of salt!  Actually, scratch that.  Salt’s probably not the best thing to eat…

If you want to learn more about the Paleo Diet, feel free to start with some reading on Wikipedia –

For many CrossFitters, making it all the way to the “World Championships” of the CrossFit Games is the ultimate dream.  Personally, my goal is qualify for the games on an Affiliate Team next year!  Training starts… now!  This video shows highlights of the individual competition from the Games this year, and I love it!

I saw this article posted on Facebook from the CrossFit Chesterton website, and really liked it.  To me, Jason did a great job of not making the story, or joining his gym, or starting to train, about him.  It’s about YOU.  You should come in because you want to get better.  You should join CIA CrossFit because you want to be more effective; in the gym, in our workouts, but more importantly… in life!  I hope you like the post, too!

“BEFORE YOU THINK ABOUT JOINING…

… You need to understand that you can get sweaty doing anything. I can slap a quirky tough guy name on hundreds of reps of anything sprinkle some gymnastic chalk on it and tell you that you’re doing great… and yeah if you haven’t touched a barbell in years your body will respond, but that is not how we operate.

Our program and methods have a proven history of success, we’ll leave it at that. If you want access to our world it is going to be entirely on you.

I don’t have a clever advertising plan. Hell I don’t even have a phone for you to call or a sign for you to find the damn place, but for over a year now the right people have walked through our doors. Grandmas, fighters, figure skaters, tri-athletes, power lifters, We just let them do our talking…

The idea of a “life changing” experience is great. Hey we have a few stories that would even bring a tear to Rambo’s eye, but their success is entirely self driven. YOU have to want this. You must realize that through physical discomfort all things are possible. We are here to coach you, provide access to a training program far superior to whatever else you have done and a top shelf environment (even though its a little dirty sometimes) to train in. Arrogant? Yes… but you wouldn’t be reading this nonsense if it wasn’t true.

Our crew is here to get you on track, get you up to speed, and turn you loose. No one is going to cuddle you and give you fabricated scripts on weightlifting and motivation.

You have to be willing to subject yourself to physical discomfort for an extended period of time. Flat out, that’s it. Through your own efforts and our guidance you will evolve and learn.

Through time, our gym has taken on its own personality. There are dozens of members that are very knowledgeable in all elements of the CrossFit game as well as elements of fitness and athletics. Our members are our greatest asset, their knowledge is priceless, and we utilize that gift to the fullest each day.

You won’t find yourself doing hundreds of reps with a pvc pipe everyday and reciting memorized scripts on different lifts! You are going to be taught what to do slowly for months, monitored for weeks, and corrected daily, as is everyone else in the place. We teach the foundations and monitor your safety, leaving a great deal of the learning process open for self interpretation. By doing this we allow you to better determine what allows you to move properly.

Simply stated what works for one may not work for another, and no youtube video will fix every person. That is where our training experience and professionalism pay off!

Still with me?

If so then you have probably found a new training facility, Whether you are looking to supplement your current sport with a new training program, in need of a well planned training regime, or need a place to do your own thing. We may be what you are looking for, and would love to have you on board!

Oh and did I mention that we have a hell of a good time learning and suffering each day with each other?

Alright everyone, the blog is finally here!

Ever since I completed my first CrossFit workout in September of 2008, I have known that my life-long dream was to become a CrossFit trainer, but I didn’t know where to start to make that a reality.  I admired what it did to people who trained using CrossFit’s methodology , I experienced how it made me and others around me feel, and I felt in my heart that it was possible to change anybody’s life for the better through CrossFit- regardless of their current ability level or physical limitations.  When I was given the opportunity to become a trainer at CIA CrossFit, I knew that the time had come to make my dream come true.  Right now.

Through mostly short, high-intensity workouts, your body will increase it’s physical capacity in ways you never thought possible.  You’ll look better, feel better, and live better.  Imagine that… Work out for less time, and see better results!

My dream: Use my talents and my passion to improve the lives of others!

What should any of that mean to you?  Come by and check out the gym, or get in contact with me, and you’ll see!
